MCHP Q2 Earnings Call Highlights Supply Constraints and Growth

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Microchip's Q2 revenues rose 42.2% YOY to $1.622B, beating estimates amid strengthening demand.
  • Industrial & data center revenues up 50.3% & 55.7%, respectively, but supply bottlenecks delayed orders.
  • MCHP projects Q3 revenues of $1.573-$1.638B, while supplier costs & product constraints pressure margins.

Microchip Technology Incorporated (MCHP - Free Report) emphasized strengthening demand, expanding backlogs and emerging supply constraints during its second-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings call. Management highlighted industrial and data center growth while cautioning that manufacturing bottlenecks are delaying shipments of high-margin products.

The company also outlined a measured December-quarter outlook, addressed rising supplier costs and discussed opportunities from recent acquisitions and next-generation semiconductor technologies.

MCHP Sees Demand Outpacing Available Capacity

President and CEO Steve Sanghi said September-quarter bookings remained strong, with the book-to-bill ratio well above one. Backlog increased entering the December quarter as customer demand strengthened across multiple markets.

However, lead times have extended from the historical four-to-eight-week range to six-to-32 weeks across product lines. Foundry, assembly and testing constraints are preventing Microchip from fulfilling certain high-margin orders.

During questioning from UBS, Sanghi explained that delayed shipments have shifted into subsequent quarters. Management expressed optimism about March-quarter backlog but stopped short of providing formal guidance.

Microchip Maintains a Disciplined Operating Approach

Microchip reported second-quarter revenues of $1.622 billion, exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.60 billion by 0.80%. Non-GAAP earnings of 97 cents per share exceeded the consensus estimate of 94 cents.

Revenue increased 42.2% year over year and 9.2% sequentially, supported by improving demand and operational execution.

Management maintained its long-term non-GAAP targets of 65% gross margin, 25% operating expenses and 40% operating margin. The immediate focus remains expanding supply availability, controlling costs and translating existing design wins into revenue.

Microchip's December Outlook Reflects Revenue Adjustments

Microchip expects third-quarter fiscal 2027 revenues between $1.573 billion and $1.638 billion, representing a sequential decline of 3% to growth of 1%.

Sanghi explained that September-quarter revenues included approximately $53 million of infrequent items involving licensing, distributor pricing adjustments and a customer contract. Excluding these items, December-quarter midpoint guidance reflects sequential growth of approximately 2.3%.

Non-GAAP gross margin is projected at 64%-65%, while adjusted earnings are expected between $0.87 and $0.95 per share. Management attributed margin pressure to product constraints, lower factory utilization and the absence of unusually profitable revenue items.

MCHP Targets Data Center and Industrial Expansion

Sanghi identified industrial and data center applications as the company's principal growth drivers. Industrial revenues increased 50.3% year over year, while data center revenues advanced 55.7%.

Microchip secured 24 combined PCIe Gen6 switch and retimer design wins, compared with 12 at June-quarter end. Management expects shipments associated with these products to increase as customer programs enter production.

During discussions with Wells Fargo, Sanghi emphasized broad industrial recovery across robotics, medical equipment, manufacturing and process control. He also highlighted aerospace and defense opportunities, supported by expanding production requirements and new design activity.

Microchip Addresses AI Spending and Pricing Risks

During questioning from Bank of America, Sanghi expressed concern about the sustainability of explosive data center infrastructure spending. He distinguished that market from Microchip's broader industrial, automotive and defense businesses.

Management argued that slower AI infrastructure expansion could release constrained manufacturing capacity. However, reduced data center investment could also affect deployment volumes for emerging products.

Separately, Wolfe Research questioned pricing benefits and margin sustainability. Sanghi acknowledged additional supplier price increases expected in January but indicated Microchip currently intends to absorb those costs rather than immediately raise customer prices again.

MCHP Integrates Acquisitions and Prioritizes Debt Reduction

Microchip completed acquisitions of Hailo and VORAGO Technologies, expanding its edge AI and aerospace and defense capabilities.

Sanghi said Hailo accelerates Microchip's AI-enabled microprocessor roadmap by approximately five years. However, its elevated research spending creates near-term operating expense pressure.

CFO Eric Bjornholt reported net debt to adjusted EBITDA of 2.36 times. During questioning from TD Cowen, he indicated that reducing leverage remains the board's priority, with dividend increases and share repurchases subject to future evaluation.
